Let the countdown begin...

Time has just flown by since the last posting. Thought I better quickly get one up before the shoot!

Amy and Kim had an action packed day in Anglesey for the Tech Recce - and beautiful weather! Think we gulped down the biggest Fish & Chips you can eat in 10 minutes :)

Iddon and Kim then also recced Chester, where we'll be filming on Monday, and met some lovely people at Venue Cymru and Theatr Colwyn.

Our full cast and crew are now confirmed - but we can always squeeze in a few more extras if you'd like to be part of this film, just get in touch!

We've also had amazing support from Twofour Broadcast (thank you Shireen Abbott and Peter Chicken!) and Procam (thank you Paul Sargeant and Andrew Black!) who have sorted us out with an amazing camera kit.

We're on our official countdown now until we start filming this Monday, the 23rd of June! (I'm sure I won't get much sleep until then.)

Had an amazing first workshop day with the main cast and the choreographer Eleanor Brown. Two more exciting days of rehearsals - and then on to the real thing!

We're filming until Thursday, the 26th of June so will try and get a posting (and maybe some sneaky pics) up shortly afterwards.

3-time BAFTA Cymru winner Sharon Morgan heads up the Cast that will be Dancing in Circles

We have all been waiting for this moment, believe me, when we can finally reveal our amazing cast for Dancing in Circles.

Sharon Morgan, 3-time BAFTA Cymru Best Actress Award winner, will open the film for us as the lead Hannah. She is known for her work in Film and TV, both in Wales and internationally. I first saw her in the captivating role of Maggie Jones in ‘Resistance’ (Dir: Amit Gupta) but many of you might know her as Mary Cooper in ‘Torchwood’.

Hannah’s younger incarnations will be played by Welsh actress Anja Conti. A 2010 Acting graduate from the Trinity University College Carmarthen, her stage credits since then are impressively long. Besides throwing herself at the role of Hannah she is currently entertaining young and old with ‘Flossy and Boo’s Curiosity Shop’, which you can also catch at the Blysh Festival later this year.

Hannah’s boyfriend / husband Aled will be played by Aled Bidder, a 2013 Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Graduate. He has already starred in acclaimed Welsh crime drama ‘35 Days/35 Diwrnod’ and is currently enjoying a stint in ‘Rownd a Rownd’. Get the inside info on successful Welsh dramas before everyone else will be talking about it!  http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/features/hinterland-and-35-diwrnod-step-aside-scandi-thrillers-here-comes-wales-9259878.html

To complete the love triangle we have brought in North Walian actor Carwyn Jones, a regular on Welsh tellies and stage. Trained at the Guildford School of Acting he is now based in Cardiff. Having grown up in Anglesey helps him bring exactly the right energy and background to the character of Dafydd.

Iddon Jones, co-writer and co-producer of the film, will be starring as Tomos. Iddon was a regular in the Welsh soap ‘Rownd a Rownd’ for over 10 years and then went to train at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London, where he was awarded the Gyearbuor Asante Prize for acting, as well as the John Thaw Foundation Award.

I have also been exploring Anglesey on bike for my location recces. #whoneedsacarwhenyou’vegotabike

Cylcing along the windy (in both senses of the word) – and hilly! – country roads really helps me think, and I can draw inspiration from nature. Think I clocked 100km over the last 3 days – all I can say is #Haribokeepsmegoing

I promise that won’t be our catering for the shoot!

And the team grows...

I can bring my stress levels down now by a notch because fantastic cinematographer and long-time collaborator Amy Newstead (Bolt, Best Cinematography at the WILDSound Film Festival for Loose Ends) is on board this exciting project!

Have a look at her varied work here: amynewstead.com

I am very excited to be collaborating with South Wales based independent dance artist and choreographer Eleanor Brown. We’ve discussed some beautiful movements already and I can’t wait to get stuck in.

Eleanor is interested in exploring film and live performance and can be seen next at the Wales Dance Platform on June 27th and 28th in Cardiff.

Costume Designer Christina McConnell is just about to graduate from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with a degree in theatre design, specialising in costume. Nevertheless, she is making time to work on ‘Dancing in Circles’ and loves the challenge of working over three different decades in the film.

First Recce, Casting Call & Hello Post-production Team

Successful first day on our recce in Anglesey – and our waterproofs have only been teased. Anything better than today though and it’ll be magical.

We’re holding the first audition for the roles of Hannah, Aled and Dafydd on the 29th of May in Cardiff. Get in touch if you’re interested in coming to the casting.

HANNAH – 22 years (1970) & 35 years (1983)

Hannah is English. She is confident and outgoing, but also impulsive and volatile, always interested in new things, exploring the world almost with child-like enthusiasm.

Hannah also likes to be flirty and the center of attention, but never in a provocative way. The first ten years of her relationship to Aled she was very loyal and would never have done anything to hurt him, but when the dynamics changed and he became a successful and well respected photographer, while she still didn’t know what to do in life, she started to look for recognition and attention from other people. In her 20s Hannah would’ve liked Aled to be more confident and daring, but when he becomes exactly that in their 30s Hannah’s role in their relationship changes and she can’t handle it.

Hannah will have to perform a few physical movement choreographies, therefore (dance) experience in that style would be helpful.

Hannah has a very distinct laugh that lets us recognize her in different ages.

ALED – 23 years (1970) & 36 years (1983)

Aled is from South Wales and speaks with the local accent, but he does not speak Welsh.

23-year-old Aled hasn’t fully found himself yet and is therefore a little more quiet and thoughtful than his girlfriend Hannah. He absolutely adores her and is fascinated by her confidence and joy in life. He is torn between taking over his dad’s business in Cardiff or following his passion for photography and travelling the world.

Once he finally stepped out of his comfort zone and pursued photography he was surprised how easy it came to him. By the age of 36 he feels at home on photo shoots and radiates confidence. Deep down he is still the same grounded character though; he has not let success get to his head.

Aled does not necessarily need dance experience.

DAFYDD – 23 years (1970) & 36 years (1983)

Dafydd is from North Wales and speaks with the local accent, as well as fluent Welsh.

Dafydd is a sculptor and has a carefree nature about him that Hannah is fascinated by. He doesn’t worry about his looks too much, which unbeknownst to him makes him even more attractive to the women. He is lucky to be in a position where he can follow his passion and not worry about menial jobs to make ends meet. He always has many friends around him but his relationships tend to be short, especially in his 30s, as women don’t like that he doesn’t have much structure in his life.

As a 36-year-old he still pursues his art but has had to learn how to run a gallery as well in order to support his income. Life is now not only about him anymore but being there for other artists as well.

Dafydd should have good dance and physical performance experience.

Let me introduce you to our fantastic post-production team!

Editor Christin Gottscheber will tackle the rushes as soon as we’re back in Austria, slotting in nicely after a busy year of shorts and music videos and before heading off to Berlin for a few months to get her hands on edit work there.

It feels like yesterday since I first worked with composer Alex Harwood on Loose Ends but in fact it’s been three years, during which she scored over 50 films! Not just a collaborator but friend, I look forward to getting stuck in with her again on this project. And she never ceases to impress, like when I mention a piece by Bach and she just starts playing it on the piano from memory!

We have go-ahead!

I can finally reveal the exciting news about my upcoming project ‘Dancing in Circles’, a narrative-dance-inspired short film set in North Wales.

"Inspired by real life events, DANCING IN CIRCLES is a relationship study over three decades that organically unfolds in a non-linear structure and reveals our protagonist’s past. We fluidly transition between the different decades, giving stage to an emotional arch and heartfelt journey, all the way from the passion of youth to the wisdom of old age. Dance, drama, art and music are combined in an innovative way to breathe new life into Welsh folklore.

Dance and physical performance are a big part of this film and let us experience force, passion and galar (Welsh: loss). By building a shared language for the characters over the different time periods with gestures that repeat and develop we can directly compare the stages of the relationship, realising that it is a living, breathing structure that grows and changes with the people involved."

The film is kindly funded by the Cultural Department of the County Tirol and the City of Innsbruck. I’m co-producing this film with long-time collaborator Iddon Jones (Loose Ends iddonjones.com) who will also star in the film as TOMOS. We’re hoping to shoot late June/early July in Anglesey. Casting calls will be announced here as soon as we’ve got dates.

Hoping to let you know about our other collaborators on the film soon! We’ll keep you posted with news as and when they come in. Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter for instant updates and reminders about new blog entries:
